Hurlene was the my first encounter with a truly independent woman. We met as freshmen at Fisk University. She offered to assist me in getting uppacked. We remained friends after graduating from Fisk with many phone calls. We shared life experiences with marriage, birth of children and grandchildren. One of my favorite memories involved Hurlene's visit to my home for my birthday. She prepared a birthday breakfast and baked a cake! To know Hurlene was to experience a really outstanding friendship. My love and condolences to the family and friends of Hurlene.

As students at Fisk University I had the pleasure of establishing a friendship with Hurlene that has spanned fifty years. I always appreciated her warm and sincere spirit, wit and willingness to assist others. As the years passed, although we did not get together as frequently as we would have desired, we would enjoy very lengthy phone conversations several times each year; sharing details about our lives, children and grand children. We saw each other as being part of extended family. Hurlene had great pride in her family, and realized Gods tremendous blessings to her and was always quick to acknowledge those blessings. She was a strong influence in the lives of many and will be greatly missed!!! Raynese and Ramon, please know that we are praying for you.
