Mrs. Ethel Marie Phillips, age 90, transitioned from this earthly life to eternal life on Friday, August 14, 2020 after her lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born July 31, 1930, the daughter of the late Arabella and Russell Booker, Sr. of Columbia, Tennessee.

She graduated from Pearl High School in 1949. After surviving a battle with tuberculosis, she met and married George Phillips and resumed her education goals, receiving her B.S. Degree and M.S. Degree in Education from Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee

in 1962 and 1971, respectively. She received an Education Specialist degree from Vanderbilt University in 1989. Throughout her educational pursuits, she was a full-time teacher at Ross Elementary in Nashville, teaching 1st grade for over 30 years.

Prior to her illness, she was an active member of Roger Heights Missionary Baptist Church where she served as head of the Sunday School and a teacher; she was an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Kappa Lambda Omega Chapter; The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Incorporated, Alpha Beta Chapter; Emily Nance Circle Missionary Society at Roger Heights Baptist Church and numerous other professional and social organizations.

Ethel, also called Marie, is preceded in death by husband, George W. Phillips, Jr.; sisters, Mamie Booker and Rosie Booker; brothers, John Leroy Booker, Sr., Russell Booker, Richard Booker, Sr. and William Booker.

She leaves to cherish her memory: son, James Phillips of Nashville, Tennessee; daughters, Darlynn Jordan of Conyers, Georgia, Idalene (Walter) Oldham of Heritage, Tennessee and Bettye (Des i) Williams of Antioch, Tennessee; brother, Carl Booker of Columbia, Tennessee; grandsons, Christopher "Eric" Jordan, Christopher (Wanda) Oldham, Fredrick Williams and Tellis Williams; granddaughters, Tracee Marie Jordan, Latonya Slaughter, Jessica Robertson, Nicole (Travis) McDowell and Traci Jackson; and a host of beloved nephews and nieces.
