Obituary:
On November 7,2017, God took Hershell by the hand and lead him to eternal rest. Mr. James Hershell Newsom Jr., was born April 24, 1922 in Rutherford County to James Hershell and Myrtle Lyon Newsom.

He was the youngest of five children. He married the love of his life, Emma B. Henry in 1950 and to this union eight children were born. "Hershell" or "Lil Brother" as he was called by all family and close friends, harecropped and farmed with his family and was educated in Rutherford County. He served in the United States Ariny from 1945-1946 stationed in Mannheim, Germany as a Special Vehicle Operator assigned to the 3758th Quartermaster Truck Company. He received a Diploma in Masonry from Murfreesboro Practical Trade School September 1, 1949. Hershell was a roller operator for many years and also did road construction throughout Tennessee.

Hershell was a member of Hickory Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Readyville, Tennessee. He was loved and well known throughout Murfreesboro, especially in the Readyville, Christiana, Dilton and Kittrell communities.

The American Legion Post # 177 Murfreesboro, Tennessee saluted him as the USA-World War II Most Seasoned Veteran, November 6,2015. The Murfreesboro Branch ofthe NAACP presented him with the Jerry Anderson Hero Award for the U.S. Army Retired, January 14,2017. He also received a Certificate of Appreciation on February 3,2017 in honor of Black History Month from Scales Elementary.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Addie Pearl Brown; brothers, Jim H. Newsom, Lyon Newsom Sr. and George Newsom; his son, Theodore R. Newsom; and grandson, Jermaine Wade.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mrs. Emma Bell Henry Newsom; sons, James Leon (Susan) Newsom Sr., Hershell Anthony Newsom, Henry Newsom Sr. and Christopher Newsom; daughters, Emma Jean (Ricky) Garrett, Deborah Newsom and Martha Newsom; his 101 yr. old 1st cousin, Susie May Newsom-McClure; 19 grandchildren, James (LaTamara) Garrett, Amy Newsom, James Leon (Alysia) Newsom Jr., Tanesha (Richcardo) Howse, Jason (Amy) Newsom, Ricky (Katherine) Garrett Jr, Jesse (Natalie) Newsom, Angela Garrett, Henry Newsom JT., Tiffany Newsom, Jessica Johnson, Jatory JOhnSON, Jennifer (Chris) Mikan, Kataris (Francisco) Bonilla, Montarius Newsom, Edwin Locklayer, Anthony Newsom, Jalen Locklayer and Devon Locklayer; 29 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; sisters-in-law, Magnolia Newsom, Mabel Henry, Martha Webb and Gloria Spann; brother-in-law, William (Emily) Henry Sr.; devoted nephew, Jerry Newsom; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.
