On June 23, 1927, the late Will and Catherine Lewis ave birth to their only daughter, Evelyn Lewis. She was he youngest of three siblings. She was born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and accepted Christ at an early age under the pastorate of the late Reverend William Howard Donaldson of First Baptist Church.

Evelyn received her primary education at Bradley Academy. She completed her secondary education at Holloway High School in 1948.

Evelyn married the love of her life, Zack James on January 8, 1952. The love Zack and Evelyn shared for one another was evident to those around them as they were blessed to spend 58 years together. This wonderful union of marriage produced a beautiful daughter, Mary Arleen. Evelyn was a devoted wife and mother who sacrificially loved her family. On September 7, 1985, Evelyn was blessed with a grandson, Marvin, whom she dearly loved. This was a special relationship, as Marvin was the apple of her eye.

Evelyn worked faithfully at Bradley Nursery School for more than 25 years as a childcare worker under the administration of Mrs. Lillian Hammonds. She took much pride in this profession of maturing the education and growth of young children.

She worked in the community by providing service to the Veterans Administration Hospital through the Aides Club.

Evelyn worked faithfully at First Baptist. She was a member of the Ardent Workers Missionary Society and the Bereavement Committee serving the church members and community for over 25 years. She took pride in her service to the church and always operated in a spirit of excellence. She was also a member of the First Baptist Mass Choir and Senior Choir and
helped with the beautification of the new sanctuary at First Baptist. She dearly loved First Baptist and worked faithfully as long as her health permitted.

Evelyn bore her illness through the last four years with great courage and strength, always expressing her deep faith in God. She remained very cheerful and fun loving through it all. That was just her personality!
Evelyn entered into a peaceful transition Tuesday, September 5, 2017.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Zack A. James; brothers, Willie L. Lewis Jr. and Robert L. Lewis; and three great grandchildren whom she loved dearly.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Mary Arleen (Don) Mitchell; grandson, Marvin (Therasa) Richardson; brother-in-law, Robert L. (Estelle) James of Colorado Springs, Colorado; godchildren, Melvin
"DJ" Daniels Jr. and Cris Morant; along with many other nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
