Lucy Rean Mays was born to the late Robert Lee and Martha Jane Smith on October 4, 1915 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. She made her transition from earth on November 29, 2009, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Reared in a Christian and nurturing environment, Lucy was baptized at an early age. She has served as Sunday school teacher, treasurer and Mother's Board officer. She was also a committed servant to the Social Committee at Salem Bible Church and participated in numerous other church activities. She remained a faithful member since 1980 until her recent passing.

Lucy loved teaching. She entered the field of education and received a B.S. in Elementary Education from Tennessee State University, formerly named Tennessee A & I State University in Nashville, Tennessee. In pursuit of further studies,she received her Masters degree from Fort Valley State University, Fort Valley, Georgia.

She married Richard William Mays, Sr. and to this union five children were born, Richard, who preceded her in death, Lorenzo, Henry, Cossetta, and Little Lucy. They were married over 40 years until his death in June 1976.

She loved working with children and made teaching her career. She was a masterful teacher who was dedicated and passionare about educating young minds. Lucy taught in the Jasper County Public Schools where she retired with more than forty years of service.

Being kindhearted and gentle, Lucy was a compassionate person. She was instantly loved by all who passed her way.

Lucy was a member of the Bright and Morning Star Lodge. Her professional affiliation was with The National Association of Educators.

She is survived by her sons, Lorenzo (Jackie) Mays, Jonesboro, Georgia, and Henry Mays, East Point, Georgia; daughters, Cossetta (Jimmy) Mays, Monticello, Georgia, Lucy(Ben)Truitt, College Park, Georgia; four sisters, Musie Thompson, Mary Ward, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Eula Webb and Martha Womack, Nashville, Tennessee; a devoted grandson, Steven(Rita)Smith, Tampa, Florida, and several other affectionate grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends.
